Our weekly meeting at Monash University is where members meet for socialising, Arts and Sciences classes, to work on crafts and projects and where those interested in armoured combat and rapier gather to practice and hone their skills. This training is hosted by the Monash University branch of the SCA, the College of St Monica, however is open to all members to attend. During the university semester, there is generally an Arts and Sciences class taught from 6pm to 7:30pm and combat instruction in armoured combat and rapier from then until about 9:30pm.
Newcomers can contact the Seneschal (group president) or visit their Discord group or Facebook page for more information. Loaner armour is available to newcomers upon request. There is also regular fighter training for heavy and fencing at the monthly Crafthall.
Please note that Monash University has stringent rules around steel weapons on campus. Visitors cannot use steel rapier blades, daggers or any other weapon regulated under Victoria’s Weapons Act without having first signed an exemption form and gotten approval from Campus Security. This is in addition to existing Victorian laws that require members to have a statutory declaration to carry or use a weapon. The on-campus approval process is currently handled by the College’s Rapier Officer and they can be contacted for further details.
As a practical measure, it is recommended that visitors use fibreglass blades. The College has a limited amount that can be loaned out on request.
Armoured combat appears to be unaffected by Victorian law or university rules.
