Despite being the shortest month of the year, February is jam packed for activities in & around Krae Glas!
On Sunday the 1st, we will be joining Saint Monica’s College & the Barony of Stormhold at the Midsumma Pride March! Please note, this is NOT an official SCA event, but we encourage anyone marching with us to wear pre-16th Century garb (especially pride-themed or otherwise colourful). We are in wave I, starting at 10:20am & meeting at the gathering point at Ian Johnson Oval, Fitzroy St. For more details, please reach out to Stormhold, as they are co-ordinating our group this year, or see the Midsumma website.
Our inaugural Fibre Guild meetup will be happening on Thursday the 5th from 7pm! If you are a fan of turning fluff into fabric (spinning, weaving, knitting, nalebinding, etc), you will find your people here! All are invited to come along, from long-time fibre artists, to avid amateurs & all those in between, even those merely curious to see what we’re all about! We will be in the back room of the Dolphin’s Keep (24 Mons Parade, Noble Park) on the 1st Thursday of every month from now on.
Also happening at the Dolphin’s Keep on that day & time (as well as every other Thursday – in February that is the 12th, the 19th & the 26th) will be our Thursday Night Gathering & Training! Whether you prefer rapier, heavy fighting, casual arts & sciences, or just hanging out, we’ve got you covered!
Fancy yourself a (cardboard) ship builder? Great in a (water)fight? Just itching for an excuse to dress up, get silly & stay cool at the same time? Join us at the Dolphin’s Keep on Saturday the 7th for Return of the Kraken! The shipyard opens at 10am, with the battle beginning at 2pm! Each ship will need a crew of at least 3 people to set sail, so forming teams in advance is encouraged! While not required, crew uniforms are also fun – last year one ship had their entire crew in plaid (though not all were happy about it)!
Another activity happening at the Dolphin’s Keep is our monthly Crafthall (Bookbinding Class) & Potluck! From 2pm on Saturday the 14th, Baron Jon will be teaching us how to make a recreation of a Nag Hammadi 4th Century codex using modern materials (based on a collegium taught by Bookbinding Laurel, Mistress Isabella de Winter at Canterbury Faire). Despite the complex-sounding name, this is actually a beginner-friendly lesson in bookbinding! No prior experience is needed for this class, but please bring $5 for materials. Afterwards we will have our community potluck dinner, which is always a wonderful time! Will people be bringing Saint Valentine’s-themed food?
After a long holiday break, February Archery Training returns to Noble Park Secondary College on Sunday the 15th from 1-4pm! This is a combat-friendly event (blunt arrows only), which means that as well as the usual Archery targets, we may also have live & moving ones! It also means our heavy fighters are welcome to come get a bit of extra fighter training in! No archery experience needed & we have plenty of archery supplies (& armour) for loan, so anyone of all ages & experience levels can just show up & shoot!
On Tuesday the 17th our Council meeting will be held via Zoom. Details will be released closer to the date.
From the 20th to the 22nd Stormhold are hosting High Tide out in Altona. There will be beach activities, war, fighting, archery, a feast & more! Bookings close on the 13th of February, so book now to avoid missing out.
Return of the Kraken & High Tide are garbed activities, so please wear an attempt at pre-16th Century clothing (though perhaps not something you want to keep dry), while Crafthall & all trainings are come-as-you-are. Newcomers are always welcome to attend any of our activities & if you have any questions about getting started, or need to borrow feasting gear/something to wear for one of our garbed activities, please reach out to our lovely Chatelaine (official newcomer-welcomer) Bermund at chatelaine@kraeglas.lochac.sca.org .
For more details on any of this month’s activities, please see the relevant Facebook event pages or the Krae Glas/Stormhold websites.
